Heat pump vs new furnace in Minneapolis, one cut my gas bill by $80
Swapped our 20 year old furnace for a cold climate heat pump last October and the December gas bill dropped from $210 to $130, but two neighbors say theirs couldn't keep up below 10 degrees. Anyone in a cold state actually running one through a full winter, did it hold up or did you need a backup?
My uncle in Duluth ran a cold climate unit through two winters and his only backup was a couple of space heaters he never touched, even during that stretch in Jan 2022 where we sat below zero for like four days straight. The trick seems to be sizing it right and not expecting a unit built for Virginia to do the job up here. Get a contractor who actually runs a Manual J and you probably won't need the furnace.
