TIL I was overfilling my compost bin for 2 years straight
I thought piling in all my kitchen scraps was the right move, but last month I noticed this gross smell and flies everywhere. Turns out you gotta balance greens with browns - a neighbor who runs a community garden told me it needs to be about 2 parts brown to 1 part green. I had like 5 parts greens because I was throwing in coffee grounds, veggie peels, and grass clippings without any cardboard or leaves. Anyone else make this dumb mistake when they started composting?

Wait, are you telling me my compost pile is basically a science experiment I've been failing at for years?

Well, you've been running a biology lab without the lab coat, so I'd say you've been getting a passing grade in life experience. Most of us are just playing mad scientist with leftover carrot peels and coffee grounds anyway. The good news is that even your worst compost experiment usually beats throwing it all in the trash.
