Warning: the tide pools at Point Reyes are nearly empty compared to 5 years ago
I took my kids to the tide pools at Point Reyes last weekend, same spot I have been going to since 2019, and it was rough to see. In about 2 hours of looking we counted 3 small sea stars total, when 5 years back my oldest kid filled a whole bucket with them before we put them all back. The water felt warm too, like 4 or 5 degrees warmer than I remember for that time of year, and a ranger there said the last few summers have been brutal on the shallow stuff. I am not a scientist, I just bring my family here, but something is clearly off with that whole little ecosystem. Has anyone else been back to a spot like this after a few years and seen it go downhill? What did you notice first?
