I finally switched from air blast to flood coolant on the 4140 job and cut my cycle by 90 seconds
Ran the first 20 parts dry with just air blast and kept breaking inserts every 4 pieces, so I flooded it and got 20 parts on one edge, anyone else see that kind of jump on 4140?
4140 is a bear when it comes to heat, and air blast just can't pull enough of it away from the cutting zone. Once that insert gets hot it softens up and rubs instead of cutting, which is why you were losing an edge every 4 parts. Flood coolant keeps the insert cool and also washes the chips out so they aren't getting recut and tearing up your edge. The 90 second drop makes sense too because you can push the speed and feed harder when the tool isn't fighting heat the whole time. What kind of coolant are you running, straight oil or a mix?
