I overheard a dean arguing with a student about Charles Murray at a coffee shop yesterday
The dean kept saying the school had to 'balance perspectives' while the kid was just asking why they'd platform someone whose work has been called racist by like 50 academic groups. I mean, I get free speech and all but it felt like the dean was hiding behind a principle to avoid an actual conversation. Has anyone else seen administrators use 'free speech' as a shield when they don't want to defend a specific invite?

Used to think free speech was an absolute and you just had to suck it up. Watching a dean hide behind that word instead of actually explaining the call changed my mind real quick.

Free speech only feels sacred until someone uses it to dodge accountability, then it starts looking like a shield.
