Watching the protest at my own school changed my view on speaker bans

I was at the University of Michigan last fall when a speaker got shouted down by a crowd. I always thought that was just students being loud. But seeing it happen, I heard a friend yell 'let him talk' and get shoved. It wasn't about ideas anymore. Now I think colleges need better rules for protests, not just canceling events. Has your school handled a shout-down without banning the speaker?

My school just banned the whole club. Classic overcorrection.

Remember that banning the club is a different policy than banning the speaker, which is what the original post asked about. My school tried a middle path once, moving a super controversial talk to a smaller room with tickets. It mostly just made everything feel secret and more tense, honestly. The real problem is when protests turn physical, like that shove. A clear rule about not touching people seems basic, but I guess it isn't. They need to enforce the rules they already have before making new ones.
