Heard a kid at the comic shop say 'I only read the big two' and it made me kinda sad
I was at my local shop in Portland last week, just browsing the indie section, when I overheard a teenager talking to the owner. He said, 'Nah, I only read the big two, Marvel and DC. Everything else is just fan stuff, right?' The owner tried to explain, but the kid just shrugged. I mean, idk, it just hit me. That's how I used to think too, maybe ten years ago. I stuck to the main superhero stuff and thought other comics weren't 'real'. But then a friend lent me a copy of 'Saga' and it totally blew my mind. It made me realize how much amazing storytelling I was missing by sticking to one lane. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you realized your comic habits were way too narrow?

Honestly I get where that kid is coming from. Marvel and DC have decades of stories and characters people already know. It’s a lot easier to just stick with what’s familiar instead of digging through a whole new section for something good.

But that's exactly why it gets boring. You already know how every story ends because they keep using the same heroes. Trying something new might take a little work, but you find stories that actually surprise you. Sticking only with Marvel and DC means missing out on so many great books. It's like only ever watching reruns of the same show. The comfort isn't worth the creative rut it puts you in as a reader.
