Talked to a kid at the shop who only knows MCU Spider-Man

He had no clue who the original Ultimate Spider-Man was and it made me realize how much the comics have faded from the public eye, has anyone else had that awkward moment explaining 60 years of lore to a 14 year old?

Read an article recently that said most kids under 20 get their Spider-Man from movies and video games, not comics. Tried explaining the whole Clone Saga to my nephew once and his eyes just glazed over after like thirty seconds. He only knew about Gwen Stacy from the movies, so telling him she died was a huge shock. It's wild how the comics are basically this secret history now unless you really dig for it.

I actually just read something similar over on a forum about how the Amazing Spider-Man comics from like 2018 had a huge drop in sales among younger readers. There was a whole breakdown showing that most kids today first meet Spider-Man in the Insomniac video games or the MCU movies, so they have no idea about stuff like the Jackal or the whole clone thing. I remember talking to my buddy's kid who thought the black suit was just from the movie Venom and had no clue it was an alien symbiote from the old comics. It's kind of sad because the comics have all this deep lore and character growth that just gets lost. Gwen Stacy dying in the comics was such a huge moment, but now it's just a random trivia fact unless you actually hunt down the old issues. I guess that's just how things go when movies and games are way easier to access than a comic book store.
