Tried a new dive knife sharpener on the boat and it messed up my edge

I mean, I used this ceramic rod thing last week thinking it'd be quick, but it actually rounded the tip and made it worse for cutting line. Anyone got a better method for keeping a blade sharp on a 14-day hitch?

That's the worst feeling, when you're trying to fix it and just make things worse. Ceramic rods can be tricky if you don't hold the angle just right. For a long trip like that, a simple pocket-sized diamond sharpener might be more reliable. Just a few passes every couple days keeps the edge from getting too bad.

Wait, did @john161 really say a dull knife is safer? That's how you get hurt trying to force a cut. I'd trust a small diamond stone over a ceramic rod any day, way less to mess up.

Why even sharpen it when a dull knife is safer on a rocking boat?
