Update: my umbilical snagged on a rebar cage at 40 feet and I had to cut the day short
Working a pier cap job off the Gulf in Galveston two weeks ago, nothing fancy, just checking scour around the pilings. I was 40 feet down when my umbilical looped itself around a rebar cage that should not have been sticking out where it was. I felt the tug, looked back, and there it was, wrapped tight about 12 feet behind me. Took me maybe 4 minutes to work it loose without kinking the line. My tender topside never felt a thing, which bugs me more than the snag itself. I radioed up, finished my sweep, and surfaced with a knot in my stomach but a clean hose. Since then I've started running a shorter working loop and keeping the line off my right side when I'm near structure. Anyone else had a snag come from junk that wasn't on the dive plan? How do you keep your tender in the loop when the line looks fine up top?
