Mismeasured a header beam on a Friday job, caught it before the crane left

I was doing a rough opening swap in Tucson last month, homeowner wanted a wider sliding door in a load bearing wall. I read the plans wrong and cut a 6x12 header 4 inches short, didn't notice until we had it on the ladder ready to set. The crane was still onsite but already about to pull away, so I flagged the operator down and paid him an extra 150 to wait. We pulled the beam, sistered on a scab piece with structural screws and plywood, then re-seated it before the inspector came at noon. The whole delay cost about 45 minutes but saved me a 900 dollar reorder plus a rescheduled inspection. I've double-checked every header dimension with a tape instead of trusting the print since then. Anyone else ever catch a bad cut thanks to slow equipment or a late inspector?

Tucson inspectors are pretty good about morning slots, but that 150 seems like the real saving here. A scabbed header with structural screws might pass their pre-check, but I would have let that crane sit till the next day if it meant getting a solid piece in. You got lucky the inspector didn't look too close at that splice.
