My salon owner mentioned Brazilian blowouts are fading out and I felt old

I overheard a younger stylist at the shop last Tuesday call keratin treatments 'so 2015' and it hit me how much the relaxer and perm world has shifted since I started 12 years ago, any other veteran stylists noticing a generational split in what clients ask for?

Oh come on, trends cycle back around every 10 to 15 years so relaxers and perms are going to make a big comeback soon enough. I've actually had more young clients ask me about perms in the last year than I did in my first five years of styling.

Trends cycle back around every 10 to 15 years" - sure, but perms and relaxers wreck your hair in a way that chunky highlights from the 2000s don't. I've seen girls walk out of salons with fried ends and chemical burns, so maybe some things should stay in the past. Just because a few people ask doesn't mean the mass market is ready to sign up for that again.

Actually gotta push back a little on the timeline thing. Trends don't always take a full 10-15 years to come back. I see gen z already rocking 90s blowouts and butterfly clips from like 20 years ago, so the cycle is definitely speeding up with social media. But you're right about the damage part. My friend got a perm last summer and her hair literally snapped off at the ends. Some trends really should stay in the archives for good.
