Shoutout to the old school stylist who taught me sectioning 10 years ago

I was doing a layered cut on a client last week and realized I still use the same sectioning pattern a stylist named Margie showed me back in 2013. She worked out of a little salon in Tulsa and had been doing hair since the 70s. Her method was simple: four sections with a zigzag part down the back for less visible lines. I tried fancier sectioning patterns over the years but always come back to this one. Last month I timed myself and it saved me about 15 minutes on a full head of highlights. Anybody else stick with a technique an older stylist taught you?

My mechanic still uses a trick his dad taught him in the 80s for aligning engines. It's funny how the simple old ways just work better no matter how much new stuff comes along.

Yeah that "simple old ways work better" thing... I've seen it play out so many times. My buddy tried using a laser alignment tool on this old Chevy 454 and spent three hours chasing numbers. I told him to just grab a straightedge and a feeler gauge, done in twenty minutes. The laser stuff is great for newer cars with tight tolerances but on anything with some miles and wear, you gotta feel it out. That old school knowledge about how much slop is acceptable is something you just can't learn from a manual.
