Hot take: a week of writing prompts so bad it made me rethink my whole method
I sat down 5 nights in a row with my usual prompt jar and every single one felt like homework from a bad class, dragons, haunted houses, the same old stuff. By Thursday I was so stuck I just wrote 300 words about my neighbor's busted fence in Toledo and it turned out better than anything the prompts gave me all week. Now I'm wondering if the prompts that scare me are the ones I actually need. What's the worst prompt you got that somehow kicked you into gear?
Wrote a grocery list once when my prompt said "describe a secret room" and somehow that dumb list turned into a whole story about my grandma hiding her lucky lottery tickets in a cereal box (she never won, but she swore the box was magic). The prompts that make me roll my eyes usually push me somewhere weird because I stop trying so hard to be deep about it. Give me a boring prompt and my brain fights back, which is where the good stuff hides. Dragons and haunted houses are too easy to fake, you know? A busted fence in Toledo is real, and real beats fancy every time.
