My writing group in Austin split over a prompt about a 3 year old secret

Last month, I gave my group a prompt: 'You find a letter you wrote to yourself three years ago, hidden in a library book in Chicago.' Half loved the clear timeline and place, saying it built instant tension. The other half said it was too limiting and killed their ideas. Which side are you on? Do you like prompts with fixed times and places, or do you find them too tight?

Did your group need a prompt or a cage?

A cage was always the answer for us, @brookep62.

Honestly saw a whole thread about this last week. Some people were saying cages can actually help focus during creative work. Like it's not about being trapped, more about cutting out distractions. Makes total sense if your group gets sidetracked easily. I get why a prompt isn't enough sometimes. You need hard limits to get anything done.
