I told my cousin he couldn't wear his shoes inside my house, and now half the family won't talk to me
So my cousin from Tokyo came to stay with me in Chicago for two weeks last month. Day one he walks in with his sneakers on, and I asked him to take them off because that's just how we do it back home in Hawaii. He got this look on his face like I'd slapped him, said in Japan you never wear shoes inside, not even for a second, it's a whole purity thing with tatami mats and ancestors and all that. I said fine, you do you, but he was upset that I even had to ask, like I should've known. Turns out his mom called my mom, and now there's this whole thing at Thanksgiving about how I embarrassed him. I still think it's fair to ask anyone to respect the house rules, but maybe I could've said it softer? Anyone else navigated a shoe fight between two cultures that both hate shoes inside?
