My Turkish in-law's funeral customs caught me totally off guard

It took 3 separate family funerals in Izmir before I understood that you're supposed to bring sugar cubes, not flowers, and that wearing black is seen as rude to the deceased's spirit. Has anyone else stumbled through a grieving ritual in another culture and made it worse before getting it right?

Wait, wearing black is actually considered rude there? That's wild, I've never heard that anywhere else. And sugar cubes instead of flowers, I would've been so lost too, honestly.

Funeral rules are just the tip, every culture has secret manuals nobody warns you about.
