GC told me my framing crew was putting headers in backwards on a $680k build in Boise
We were 3 weeks into framing a custom home in Boise when the GC walked the site and pointed at every window opening. He said the trim carpenter would have to shim everything because we had the jack studs on the wrong side. I argued for a bit but he pulled out the plans and showed me the detail callout I had been skipping. Cost me 2 days of rework and about $3,400 in labor. Now I walk every opening with the plans in hand before the crew nails anything off. Anyone else had a GC catch something that basic on your own job?
Laughed at the part about walking every opening with plans in hand because I learned that lesson the hard way too. Had a GC stop my crew over a simple door header that was supposed to be a 2x10 but we had crammed a 2x8 in there, and he just stared at me like I was his teenager who forgot to take out the trash. Took my guys half a day to pull it and swap it, and I still had to buy lunch for everyone so they wouldn't be mad at me. Now I tape the plan sheets right inside the front door of every house so nobody can claim they never saw the detail. Nothing keeps you humble faster than a guy in a clean truck pointing at your work and being right.
Keeping a small framing square in my pouch saved me on a similar deal last spring, guy flagged two headers on the same wall that were each an inch shy. I started writing the sizes right on the studs with a sharpie before we frame anything, so my guys see 2x10 in fat letters instead of guessing. Sharpie washes off or gets covered anyway, and it has kept me from buying apology pizzas three jobs running.
