Had a contractor tear into my foundation plan and I actually listened

A while back I hired a builder I really respected to look over my plans before I broke ground on a house I was designing for a client here in Vermont. He took one look at my foundation layout and basically said 'you're asking for trouble with the frost line on that north wall.' I had drawn up a standard slab on grade but he pointed out that the soil on that side of the lot had a lot of clay and would heave something fierce come January. I was pretty set on my design but he had 30 years in the business so I switched to a full frost wall with insulation. That was 3 winters ago and the house hasn't had a single crack or heave issue. Anybody else had an older builder change your plans for the better like that?

you're asking for trouble with the frost line on that north wall" - man that exact same thing happened to me with a guy who built houses around here for 40 years. He caught a drainage issue I totally missed on my own plans and saved me a ton of headache later.

Hate when people ignore the old timers. That guy with 40 years experience probably saw a dozen north walls crack before breakfast. Frost heave is no joke, it'll lift a whole foundation if you don't get it right.
