Installed a backup sump pump last month after a close call

We had a heavy rainstorm back in April that had our basement sump pit almost overflowing. I got nervous watching the water rise so I went online and bought a battery backup sump pump for about $350. It took me a full Saturday afternoon to install it with the check valve and everything. The peace of mind is worth the cost since we live in a low spot where drainage is iffy. Just last week we had another storm and the main pump died for about an hour before I noticed. The backup kicked on automatically and kept the basement dry. Has anyone else put in a backup system after a scare like that?

Hooked mine up after the same thing happened to me. Spent a whole Saturday cursing at PVC glue and check valves. That battery backup paid for itself the first time the power flickered during a bad storm. I test mine every month by unplugging the main pump for a minute just to make sure the backup fires up.

Did a friend do that and his basement still flooded?
