Overheard a builder at the lumber yard say he never pays for a second quote

I was grabbing some treated pine for a deck job last Tuesday and heard two guys talking at the counter. One of them said he just picks one guy and sticks with them, no shopping around, because he figures trust is worth more than saving a few grand. It got me thinking about how much time I waste chasing bids when I already know who does good work here in Portland. Has anyone else switched to just going with one builder they trust instead of price comparing every project?

Three years ago I switched to one contractor for all my home projects after getting burned by a lowball bid that ended up costing double. He's not the cheapest guy in town but he shows up when he says he will and his work holds up. That peace of mind has saved me way more than chasing quotes ever did, your mileage may vary though.
