Shoutout to the builder who warned me about open shelving in kitchens

An old custom home builder up in Portland told me two years ago that open shelving looks great in photos but is a nightmare in real life. I figured he was just being grumpy about modern trends. Fast forward to last month when my sister-in-law had her kitchen done with all open shelves and she's already complaining about dust and clutter. Now I'm planning my own kitchen remodel and I'm leaning toward upper cabinets with glass fronts to get that look without the hassle. Has anyone else had a builder steer them away from something that seemed trendy but turned out to be impractical?

My friend in Seattle had open shelves and dusted her dishes every single week.

Glass front uppers have worked out great in my place. You get that nice visual of seeing your dishes without the daily dusting routine kicking in. I put a few of them on the main wall where people can see them and kept standard solid doors on the rest. Makes it feel open without the headache of open shelving. Your mileage may vary but that balance has served me well.

Honestly, glass front cabinets are the perfect compromise.
