Talked to an old builder in Nashville who said my foundation plan was too complicated - cut 3 corners and saved $4k
He pointed out I was over-engineering it with extra footings that weren't needed for my soil type. Has anyone else had a builder talk them out of spending more?

Did you actually get the soil tested first? That’d be the deciding factor if his advice was solid or just him wanting an easier pour.

Wait, you didn't get a soil test first? That seems like a huge gamble on a foundation. I would have wanted hard numbers before cutting anything that saves $4k.
