Went with a local custom home builder over a big national company - here's what happened with my kitchen layout

Last year I was picking between a local builder (Tuscaloosa Custom Homes) and one of those national franchise companies for my new house. The national guy had flashy marketing and a lower base price by about $12k. But the local guy actually sat down with me for 90 minutes and asked what cabinets I wanted for the island, where the sun hits the counters, stuff like that. National guy just showed me their 3 standard layouts. I went local and honestly my kitchen has 2 more drawers than I would have gotten with the other guy. Has anyone else had a builder who actually listened to small details like that?

Hang on, are we really acting like a few extra drawers is some life changing event? It's just a kitchen layout, not a major life decision that determines your happiness. I mean yeah the local guy probably did a better job listening, but let's not act like the national company would have left you with a total disaster.

Well I used to think those big companies knew what they were doing, but your story really changed my mind about going with the little guy. That extra time they took to ask about your cabinets makes a world of difference.
