Rant: My antivirus failed during a scam email, now I'm not sure it's essential

I always hear that antivirus is critical, but mine didn't flag a phishing link that almost got me. Some say it's a basic shield against malware, while I feel it can create complacency. In my case, being cautious online did more good than the software. What's your take, is antivirus overhyped for daily use?

Your antivirus missed a phishing link? That's wild, it should catch those basic scams.

Yeah, "basic scams" is the thing. I read that some phishing links use a legit domain first, then switch it after the antivirus checks it.

Missing a phishing link is exactly why I still use one. Like @sullivan.caleb said, scams can change after the check, so it's a needed first layer. It's not perfect, but it catches stuff I might miss on a bad day.
