Appreciation post: I shot malls with my phone for 3 years before someone on here said to check if my lens was dirty
Ngl I felt dumb when a guy named Rick replied to my post of the Clearview Mall in Butler, PA and just wrote 'wipe your lens, bud.' I pulled up the shots from that day and there was a smudge in the same spot on all 40 of them, right where the food court skylight hits. Turns out I had been cleaning the screen and never the actual camera lens on the back. Some folks say dirty glass is part of the gritty dead mall look and you should keep it, others say clean it every time or your photos are worthless. Where do you land on that, do you clean the lens before every walk or just leave it?
Wait, how did nobody in THREE YEARS tell you about the lens?? That was basically me too, except my thing was the little fingerprint smudge on my front camera. Every selfie I took at the Oxford Valley Mall food court had this hazy glow on the left side and I just thought my phone was old. My sister finally grabbed it one day and wiped the lens with her shirt and I wanted to crawl under a table. Now I do a quick shirt wipe before I even get out of the car, takes two seconds and saves me from ruining a whole walk. The gritty look people talk about is real but that is a choice you make on purpose, not a smudge you forget about for years.
