Church potluck rule about political talk backfired on me last Sunday

So our congregation added a new rule 3 weeks ago, no politics or religion talk at the potluck table unless it stays 100% agreeable. I thought 'fine, that's doable.' But last week I brought up how our town's zoning board keeps rejecting the low income housing project off Route 9, and a deacon told me to cool it. I said 'isn't housing a moral issue?' He said 'it's political now.' That got me thinking, where do we draw that line? If we can't discuss how our faith shapes policy at church, then where are we supposed to? Has anyone else run into this kind of wall in their own group?

Wait, can we even agree on what counts as potato salad anymore, or is that political too?
