Told my dad his way of seasoning cast iron was old school nonsense. Guess who was wrong.
Honestly, my dad always said to just use salt and a paper towel to clean cast iron, no soap ever. Ngl, I thought he was just stuck in his ways and ignored him for like 2 years. Last week my skillet started rusting after using soap a few times, so I tried his salt method. It worked perfectly and now I feel dumb for not listening sooner. Has anyone else had a family member give cooking advice that turned out to be totally right?

Salt and oil is all I've ever used.

idk, I saw this chef on YouTube once who was like "your grandmother wasn't wrong about cast iron, she just didn't have dish soap that stripped seasoning." he said modern dish soap is way harsher than what they used back then. my aunt always told me to just wipe it down with oil after cooking and never use soap at all. I tried it with my cheap lodge pan and the seasoning actually built up way better over time. kind of makes you wonder what other old cooking tricks are actually legit.
