PSA: I stopped chasing every new Detroit client and started asking for referrals, made $3,200 extra last quarter
For two years I was spending about 10 hours a week cold emailing people around Detroit trying to get my marketing shop off the ground. Last summer a guy at a Corktown coffee meetup asked me why I wasn't just asking my happy clients for names, and honestly I had no good answer. So I started sending a simple text after every project asking if they knew one other owner who needed help, nothing fancy. Got 4 referrals in 3 months, closed 2 of them, and that was $3,200 I didn't have to chase. Anyone else here tried referral only growth and did it actually hold up long term?
$3,200 over 3 months is like $266 a week, which is cool and all but that's not really quitting-your-job money either. I mean yeah referrals beat cold emailing but at some point you run out of warm intros in a city and you're back to grinding.
