Just realized I was sanding with the grain wrong on my deck
Spent 3 days refinishing my back deck in Austin, and the finish kept coming out blotchy. Turns out I was using a belt sander with 60 grit when I should've hand-sanded with 120 after the pressure wash, and the guy at the hardware store finally pointed it out. Anyone else make this mistake before they switched to orbital sanders?
A belt sander with 60 grit is way too much for a deck, that thing will gouge the wood and leave marks no matter what you do after. Going orbital with 80 then 120 would've saved you those 3 days. The blotchy finish is almost always the wood surface not being even, not the stain itself.
