Am I the only one who used to just slap joint compound on cracks without taping first?
Finally got a clean finish on my drywall repair after I started using fiberglass mesh tape and a 6-inch knife, swear it cut my sanding time by half - anyone else have a go-to tape trick that made a big difference?

Oh I gotta push back on this a little. I mean, maybe it's just me but I actually prefer no tape for small patches and cracks. The tape adds bulk and you end up with more sanding anyway. I've been patching holes in my old house for years and if you just fill the crack with a good setting compound and let it shrink, then do a second thin coat, it blends in way better than with tape. The tape always leaves that little ridge line you can feel even after painting. Idk, I think people got sold on tape because it's easier for beginners but for someone who's done it a while, skipping it can give you a flatter finish. Plus you don't have to worry about bubbles or the tape peeling up later.

Oh man, I still have a bucket of old compound dust in my garage from skipping tape.
