Had the worst week of my career in a Phoenix body shop last August

I worked on a 2017 Civic that came in with what looked like minor rear damage, but the unibody was twisted bad underneath. Took me three full days just to get it straight on the frame machine, and the insurance adjuster fought every hour I claimed. Then the very next week, a 2023 Tahoe with a dented fender breezed through in four hours start to finish with zero issues. Has anyone else had jobs that should be easy turn into nightmares, or the other way around?

Blew $600 on a CNC conversion kit that was total junk

Picked up a kit from a seller on AliExpress for my old Bridgeport. Ad said it would work with Mach3 right out of the box. Nope. Steppers wouldn't even hold position after 3 tries. Never buying motor kits from China again without seeing real reviews first. Anyone else get burned on cheap conversion parts?

The day I realized I was packing my whole life wrong for moving

After three moves in five years, I finally figured out that rolling clothes instead of folding them saves way more space. A friend in Berlin showed me when I was cramming stuff into duffel bags for a flight out of Kyiv. I had been wasting half my suitcase space for years. Anyone else have a packing trick that took way too long to learn?

Spent $600 on a paralegal for a landlord dispute and it actually paid off

My landlord tried to keep my whole damage deposit over some normal wear and tear on the carpet. I was about to just let it go but my buddy said talk to a paralegal first. Found one in Edmonton who charged $600 flat to write a demand letter and handle the emails. Landlord folded after two weeks and I got $1,200 back. Has anyone else here used a paralegal for small housing claims instead of going straight to court?

I spent 3 years cleaning chimneys with the wrong brush size

Yep, I was using a 7-inch brush on standard 8x8 flues for years. Figured it out when a customer handed me their old brush from the 80s and it actually scraped better. The smaller brush was leaving a ring of soot on the corners that I never noticed. Any other sweeps find out they've been using the wrong gear this whole time?

Debate about wood types got me thinking after talking to an old timer

I was at a comp last weekend in Kansas City and got into it with this guy named Frank who's been running a stick burner for 30 years. He said using only hickory is lazy and that you're missing out on flavor blending with fruit woods like apple or cherry. I've always been a hickory purist but he showed me a brisket he did with a 70/30 mix of hickory and peach wood and honestly it was incredible. So which side do you fall on - stick to one wood or mix it up for different profiles? Has anyone else had their mind changed by a random conversation like that?

Brick or block for a garden wall, what's your go to?

I'm starting a garden wall next week for a client in Portland and I keep going back and forth on material. I usually use clay brick for smaller projects like this because it looks clean and ages nice. But the client wants it about 4 feet tall and 20 feet long, so I'm thinking concrete block might hold up better against the wet ground here. My last garden wall with brick had some frost heave issues after two winters, and I had to go back and repoint a bunch of joints. On the flip side, block looks clunky unless you spend extra on a textured finish or stucco it. What do you guys usually pick for retaining walls that are more cosmetic than structural? Does the local climate swing your choice one way or the other?

Three years ago I found a cockroach living in a Canon AE-1

Back in 2021 I had a customer bring in an AE-1 that smelled weird. When I popped the bottom plate off, a big cockroach ran out across my bench. It had been living off the foam seal degradation inside the mirror box. Has anyone else found live bugs inside old gear or was that just my bad luck?

Still seeing barbers skip the 0 gapping step on clippers

Was at a shop swap meet in Tacoma last month. Watched three different barbers do a fade. None of them zero gapped their blades first. You can see it in the blend line every time. It's not a big deal on a 1 or 2 guard. But on a 0.5 or 0 fade that skip shows up like a sore thumb. I check my Wahl Seniors every morning before the first chair. Takes 2 minutes. How do you guys get around that uneven blend without fixing the gap?
