So I tried using a heat gun to strip paint off my front door

Was stripping a 1920s front door in my place near Portland. Set the heat gun to 750 degrees like the tutorial said. Ended up charring a 4 inch section of the wood before I even noticed. Had to sand it down and refinish the whole bottom half to match.

Wait did your friend go through the same thing? My buddy tried that on his craftsman door and ended up with a weird melted look in one spot because he held the gun too long.

The trick is to keep the gun moving constantly and never stay in one spot for more than a second or two. Lower temps around 600 work better for old wood too. @torres.jason your friend probably had the same issue I did, holding it too steady while checking the paint. Scraping right behind the heat helps a lot, you can feel when the wood starts getting too warm. Sanding down the charred spot was a pain but matching the stain on a 1920s door is the real nightmare. Ended up using a gel stain to blend it and it turned out okay.
