Always thought the cutterhead was the main power drain, but a report from the Army Corps on the Mississippi project proved me wrong.

I was reading an old engineering report about the Dredge Potter on the lower Mississippi, and it said the main pumps can use over 70% of the total engine power. I always figured the cutter took the most juice, especially in hard material. It makes sense when you think about moving that much slurry, but I never had a number for it. Has anyone else seen power use break down that way on their rig?

Yeah, pumps doing the heavy lifting tracks with what I've heard too. Wild how the obvious guess is wrong sometimes.

Guess I've been giving the cutterhead too much credit all these years, lmao. Those pumps are basically the real divas of the operation. Just shows you can learn something new from an old report.
