Showerthought: Is it worth running a pump past its service hours or should you just stop?
My Ellicott 270 had a pump seal blow last week on the Mississippi near Baton Rouge. I was pushing it to get through a tough clay layer, and the warning signs were there for about 2 hours before it let go. Cost me $1,200 in repairs and a full day of downtime. Has anyone else had luck running equipment past its recommended intervals, or do you always shut down at the first sign of trouble?

Why wait till the seals blow and lose a full day?

Called them 'seals' once in front of my mechanic and he just stared at me. They're CV joints, man.
