My neighbor's fence dispute ended up costing me $2,400 in legal fees last spring

I put up a new fence between our yards in Edmonton back in March, but the neighbor claimed it was 6 inches onto his property and hired a lawyer. After going back and forth for months, I paid for a land survey that showed I was actually on the right side the whole time. Has anyone else dealt with boundary disagreements here and found a cheaper way to resolve them before lawyers get involved?

Yeah that's rough, especially coming out on the right side and still getting stuck with the bill. Did the neighbor at least offer to split the survey cost after seeing the results, or did they just shrug it off? Seems like if they were so sure about the boundary they'd want to cover their own mistake.

Did you actually talk to the neighbor before the lawyer got involved, or did it go straight to legal? Because honestly, a calm conversation and a copy of the survey could've probably saved you that whole mess. That's a brutal $2,400 lesson though, especially when you were right the whole time. Did the neighbor even apologize or pay you back for the survey after that?
