Old job site in Midtown still uses fuse boxes...

I stopped by an old building on 42nd Street last week to help a buddy with a light fixture. Place was built in the 20s and they still had those old screw-in fuse panels in the basement. Got me thinking about how different things were when I first started... We used to pull wire through knob and tube without a second thought. Now everything has to be arc-fault and tamper-proof. Any of you guys run into old systems that make you stop and remember how far we've come?

Oh man, those old fuse panels bring back memories. I remember one job in an old factory building where we had to replace a whole section of knob and tube that was literally crumbling apart. We ended up just running new romex through the same holes after making sure the insulation was safe. Simple fix with a fish tape and some patience. Those old systems definitely taught me to appreciate what we have now, even if the new code stuff is a pain sometimes.

Fishing new wire through old holes always felt like playing a game of wire Tetris, didn't it. At least those old timbers gave you plenty to staple to, modern steel studs are their own kind of headache.
