TIL at the Denver electronics recycling center that they just shred everything with boards still in it, which seems like a huge waste of good parts to me.

I watched them toss a whole pallet of old routers and printers into the shredder last week, and I think we should push for more component salvage before recycling, so what's the best way to convince a facility to let repair folks pick through stuff first?

My local place in Austin used to let hobbyists grab stuff, but they stopped after someone cut themselves on a case. The best argument is safety and cost. If you can form a small club and get insurance, the facility might see you as less of a risk. Offer to sign waivers and only come at set times so you don't slow their work down. It's a tough sell because their main goal is to shred fast, not save parts. I tried to set this up once and got laughed out of the office, so maybe don't take advice from me.

Yeah getting laughed at is basically a rite of passage for this hobby lol. It's a numbers game where you just gotta find the one manager who's also a nerd. Mark's right about the waivers and set times being your best shot.
