That cheap laser guide I bought off Amazon actually saved me today
I always figured those laser guides for aligning rails were a gimmick, but I tried a $18 one on a tricky door installation in an old building in Nashville and got it dead level on the first try. Has anyone else had good luck with those or did I just get lucky?

Dead level on the first try" meaning you got lucky once and now you're ready to sell your bubble level. That's like me hitting one good pool shot and telling everyone I'm a pro. Cheap laser guides can work fine on a simple install where the wall isn't twisted to hell. But try throwing that thing in an old house with crooked studs and drywall that's been patched five times. You'll be chasing a dotted line around the room like a drunk cat. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it worked out for you. But keep that box with the return label handy.

Has anyone else here actually tried taking a cheap laser level outside in direct sunlight? Forget crooked walls - the line just disappears. You're standing there squinting like an idiot while the sun eats your dot. That's the part nobody talks about with these things. @river_scott, you mentioned the old house with crooked studs, but what about the guy trying to hang a fence line across a sunny backyard? A bubble level won't help you there either, but at least you can see the damn thing.
