Tried using a rasp I found at a flea market in Branson last month

Honestly, the thing bent like a pretzel on the first hoof, and I learned to never trust a tool without knowing its history. Anyone else have a cheap tool story that went sideways?

That rasp was probably just fine. My grandpa used flea market tools his whole life and never had one fail. Sometimes you just get a bad piece of steel, new or old.
