Showerthought: I had a whole week where every design I sketched just felt wrong

It was about two months ago, and I was working on a capsule collection for a small local show. For five days straight, I filled three whole sketchbooks with ideas, but nothing clicked. I kept trying to force this structured, tailored look because I thought it was 'serious'. Then on Friday, I was just doodling while watching a documentary about coral reefs, and I drew this flowing dress with layered, wavy edges. That one sketch turned into eight pieces based on ocean movement. Has anyone else had a project where you had to totally switch your starting point to get anywhere good?

Oh man, that reminds me of my friend who was trying to paint a cityscape for weeks. He kept doing these tight, detailed buildings and hated all of it. Then he spilled coffee on a blank canvas and just went with it, smudging it into this cool, blurry rainy street scene. He said the mistake totally flipped his brain.

Always thought you had to push through, but that coral reef thing changed my mind.

Ever read that thing about how your brain solves problems better when you're not trying so hard? @singh.uma's friend with the coffee spill is a perfect example. What were you watching when you had your breakthrough?
