Oh man, that's the worst! Kansas City soil can be so unpredictable with all that clay. You gotta check for old tree roots or buried debris first. I always use a post hole digger to feel around before setting the post. Sometimes you need to dig a wider hole and pack it with gravel for a solid base. Wet clay just turns into a slick slide for a post.

Actually gravel can trap water against the post.

Yeah, @blair_lane knows his dirt. Reminds me of the time my buddy tried to put up a mailbox and hit a forgotten septic line.
