Update: I thought those laser level tripod mounts were a gimmick until I had to do a 50-foot hallway solo last week.

My boss in Charlotte swore by them, and after trying one to keep my line straight without a helper, I finished the layout in half the usual time... what other 'gadget' actually turned out to be worth the cash for you guys?

Waste your money if you want, but that's just another tool to lose or break. A chalk line and a pair of eyes worked fine for my dad and they work fine for me now. All these gadgets just make us lazy and dependent on batteries. That hallway job would have been just as fast with some basic skill and planning, no fancy tripod needed. Real tradesmen get by on know-how, not the latest gimmick from the tool truck.

You know, I used to feel exactly like @victorb51. I swore by my chalk box and a sharp pencil. Then I had to lay out a long tile pattern on a big, uneven floor. The chalk kept snapping, my lines were all over the place, and I wasted a whole morning fixing my own mistakes. That laser level got the entire room perfect in about two minutes. It didn't replace skill, it just made sure my skill wasn't wasted on bad lines. Sometimes the right tool just saves you from your own eyes getting tired.
