It's the same with polishing silver. A bit of elbow grease and suddenly you're a wizard who can fix anything.

Paste wax works wonders on dried out wood furniture. Apply it thin with a cloth, let it haze, then buff with a clean rag. The buffing is key, it fills tiny scratches and brings up the shine. People are always shocked how much better stuff looks after a basic wax job. It's one of those old school tricks that still beats most modern products.
