I was so proud of my fossil until it broke

I found a cool fossil on the beach last week. But when I cleaned it, the change in temperature made it split. Now I'm back to square one.

Wait, it just turned to dust? That's the worst possible outcome. I figured it would crack into a few pieces you could maybe glue back together. Having it completely disintegrate is a special kind of heartbreak. All that work finding it and then it's just gone. Makes you wonder how anything survives long enough to become a fossil at all.

Ever hear about fossils cracking from sudden temperature changes? My cousin found some shale pieces that basically turned to dust when they dried out. It's a real bummer when they don't hold together.
