Rant: My town council banned protest signs on public benches

Our council in Greenville passed a rule saying no signs on park benches. I put one up about library funding and got a $50 fine the same day. Has anyone else had local rules used to quiet specific messages?

Used to think fines like that were reasonable, but this changed my mind.

Oh come on, fines are one of the few things that actually make companies change their behavior. Without real financial penalties they'd just treat it as a cost of doing business and keep polluting or whatever they were doing. Corporations don't respond to gentle requests, they respond to their bottom line getting hit. Just look at how many companies break rules until the fines get big enough to actually hurt.
