My dog's broadcast moment made me a mute button convert

His unexpected howl during a team call was so distracting that I now mute as a habit.

Get your mute button location burned into muscle memory, like hitting the space bar if that's your shortcut. When my dog barks, I instantly mute, give a quick "sorry, dog thing," and unmute. That tiny apology stops the awkward silence because it shows you're in control. I keep treats by my desk now for urgent distractions, just toss one to buy a quiet minute.

That "unexpected howl" is the real test. Did your team just freeze in stunned silence for a second, or did someone definitely crack up laughing? I'm always curious if those moments break the ice or just make everyone deeply uncomfortable. My cat once walked on my keyboard and typed gibberish into a shared document, and the silence was way worse than if someone had just laughed.

Saw a study that said laughter actually breaks tension better than silence, like @elliot836's quick apology does.
