Local guide told me I was hiking too fast in Denali

I was powering through the Savage River loop last summer like it was a city sidewalk when a ranger stopped me and said I was missing all the wildlife by going that pace. She told me to stop every 50 yards and just listen for 30 seconds, and I ended up seeing a fox and two ptarmigans I would have blown right past. Has anyone else had to totally change their hiking pace after a local called them out?

Did it really take a ranger telling you that to slow down? I used to think speed was everything too.
