Overheard my neighbor talking about the old days of dog mushing

Ngl, it got me thinking. My neighbor was telling his grandson about running supplies up the Iditarod trail in the 80s, no GPS or nothing, just a map and a compass. Makes me wonder if we've lost some real grit up here now that everyone uses satellite phones and apps for everything.

Buddy of mine up in Nome told me a story about his granddad who drove dogs in the 60s during a bad snowstorm. He got lost for three days, ate nothing but dried fish and chewed on his boot leather to stay alive. When he finally made it to the village, he just shrugged and said the dogs needed the rest anyway. Kinda puts things in perspective, doesn't it?

Three days on dried fish and boot leather and the guy's main concern was his dogs getting enough rest? That's the kind of humility you just dont see anymore lol. Meanwhile I got lost for 20 minutes on a hiking trail last summer and called SAR on my sat phone because my battery was at 15%. Modern problems I guess.
