The 1954 quake that moved an Alaskan town 60 feet sideways
I was digging through old USGS records last month and found something wild about the Good Friday quake. Most folks know about the damage in Anchorage, but I didn't know that parts of Whittier actually shifted 60 feet to the west from the fault slip. Took me three passes at the maps to believe it, the town's dock ended up completely misaligned with the old pilings. Has anyone else gone down that rabbit hole of the 1964 uplift measurements?
I'm not sure I buy the 60 feet sideways thing for Whittier, fault slip usually shows up more as vertical uplift than a town sliding that far over. Maps can get skewed from resurveying after the quake, so I'd want to see the actual survey notes before believing it.
